An Apple Watch is not a cheap item so the last thing you want is to ruin it by wearing it in a hot tub if that will do it some harm.
Apple Watches from series 2 onwards are built to remain waterproof in depths up to 50 meters, which is very deep as the generally accepted maximum for recreational diving is 18 meters. Anything deeper than that is considered deep diving.
This means that as far as the depth of water goes your Apple Watch will be completely safe.
But what about the temperature of the water?

Will the heat of a hot tub damage your Apple Watch?
How safe your Apple watch may be in a hot tub depends on the temperature the hot tub is set to.
Apple’s guidelines state that Apple watches are designed to be used within a temperature range between 32°F and 95°F (0ºC and 35ºC).
The temperature of most hot tubs is set to higher than 95ºF since blood temperature is 98.6ºF and water below that temperature feels cool to the body. Often a hot tub will be set to a temperature of 100ºF and above.
For this reason it is recommended that you do not wear your Apple Watch in a hot tub.

You will have no problems wearing your Apple Watch when you swim in a pool as all Apple Watches from series 2 onwards are waterproof.
Ideally, you should rinse the watch in fresh water after you swim in a pool.
Can you wear an Apple Watch in the sea?
An Apple Watch will be fine if you will just be swimming in the sea.
However, Apple state that Apple Watch models should not be used for scuba diving, water skiing, or other activities involving high-velocity water such as on a jet ski.
It would be a good idea to give your Apple Watch a rinse in fresh water after swimming in the sea to remove any salt residue.
Can you wear an Apple Watch in the shower?
You will have no problems if you shower with your Apple Watch on. Personally I would always remove any watch when showering but that is just me I guess.
What to do after wearing an Apple Watch in water
Apple state the following:
Apple Watch Series 2 and newer. When you start a swimming workout, your Apple Watch automatically locks the screen with Water Lock to avoid accidental taps. When you finish, turn the Digital Crown to unlock the screen and clear any water from your Apple Watch. You hear sounds and might feel some water on your wrist. To clear water from Apple Watch manually, swipe up on the bottom of the watch face to open Control Center, tap Water Lock, then turn the Digital Crown to unlock the screen and clear water from the speaker.
